Who was Gilli the giant, the “Popo” of Bezzecca?

His name was Bernardo, but it was dubbed by all "El Popo". He was born in Bezzecca way back in 1726 and was the youngest of four children of Bernard and Maria Gilli Oradini. At the age of twenty years already he measured 2 meters and sixty, and at the time was probably the tallest man in the world, but it seems that one of his ancestors had already reached a height like that.
In 1745 Bernardo left Bezzecca and began performing disguised as a turkish along with Perghem, an acrobat  of Nomi who traveled throughout Europa. Bernardo was a gentle giant that does not awe-inspiring, his fame led him to be received by kings and popes, including where Louis XV of France and Catherine of Russia. When he returned to his country he had built a house in the square, where now stands the town hall.
In the last years of his life he lost the use of his legs and died in 1791. According to his will the skeleton was donated to Dr. Canella of Riva del Garda to use it for scientific purposes. Part of the skeleton  was exhibited   in the Civic Museum in Rovereto. The same fate was for a life-sized portrait and a giant silk long socks. In 1872 it was set up a showcase with documents and passports of Bernardo. When the museum was hit by a bomb during the First World War everything went lost.

Now, in the Town Hall in Piazza Garibaldi in Bezzecca, you can visit his house and find out how high was the Popo of Bezzecca.
