Mezzolago

Often this village is called "pearl of the lake", thanks to its sunny and protected position, between the green meadows and the rich blue of the water.

The village takes its name froma the latin expression "in medio laco", which means "in the middle of the lake", due to its position. The most important building of the village is the Church of St. Michael. The first and most curious thing of this simple church is the partially covered fresco on the exterior wall. It represents St. Christopher, the Patron saint of wayfarers, who a long time ago used to pass near the church walking down the old road that led to Molina. The sacristy that was built after the church cut off part of the fresco. The sundial painted on the same wall has recently come to light during a restoration work. The building reaches back to the 16th century. What has to be noticed is the peculiarity of the small bell-tower that is elevated above the church's roof, one of its corners lies on the nave arch and the other on a large wooden girder.
The village of Mezzolago, praetorian see and residence of the Lords Ugolini and the noble families Formenti and Toccoli hosted also the illustrious poet Gabriele D'Annunzio. He arrived here on the occasion of the opening of the tunnel that connect the lake with the hydroelectric power plant in Riva del Garda. He was given the task of priming the last mine to open the tunnel.
