Het PaalwoningenmuseumHet Paalwoningenmuseum
Een belangrijke archeologische vindplaats aan de oevers van het Lago di Ledro werd in 1929 onderwerp van een grootschalige studie. Daarna werd de plaats niet meer onderhouden waardoor er veel geplunderd werd. Er vonden talrijke diefstallen plaats en zogenaamde zelfbenoemde en niet deskundige archeologen deden zonder vergunning onderzoek en veroorzaakten veel schade. In 1960 werd de vindplaats echter beschermd en op de juiste manier onderzocht en uitgebreid dankzij de interventie van het oudheidkundig bureau uit Padua dat destijds verantwoordelijk was voor het Ledrogebied. Het werd met hulp van het natuurwetenschappelijk museuem Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali in Trento weer in oude staat hersteld.
Het museum kende drie belangrijke fases van opgravingen die eindigden in respectievelijk 1961, 1965 en 1967, en die een aanzienlijke hoeveelheid materiaal opleverden. Er werd een museum geopend om de vondsten tentoon te kunnen stellen en om een beeld te kunnen schetsen van de culturele, sociale en economische context van de overblijfselen van de paalwoningen in het meer die tot op de dag van vandaag zichtbaar zijn aan de overs van het Ledromeer.
De bouw van het museum begon in 1968 en was gereed in 1972, waarbij de gehele constructie gemaakt is van hout met grote glasoppervlakten zodat het gebouw naadloos in de omgeving past en er geen visuele barrières zijn tussen de vondsten in het museum en de plek waar de overblijfselen gevonden zijn. In het midden van de enige hal die het museum rijk is, staat een kano die is uitgehakt uit een enorme spar met een lengte van 4,5 meter en een breedte van 0,75 meter.
In de vitrines van het museum zijn diverse vondsten van keramiek in bruine of rode kleuren te bewonderen. In het bijzonder zijn er grote afgevlakte kegelvormige kruiken voor levensmiddelen of bekers en mokken te zien die gelukkig grotendeels intact zijn. Onder de terracotta werktuigen zijn vooral de zogenaamde ‘mysterieuze’ objecten erg fascinerend: het zijn rechthoekige segmenten die voorafgaande aan het bakken zijn voorzien van inscripties met punten en lijnen waarvan het gebruiksdoel onbekend is. Dankzij de vondst van restanten van huis- of wilde dieren, etensresten en sedimenten onder in de kannen en kruiken, is het mogelijk geworden om de eetgewoonten van de toenmalige bewoners te reconstrueren. Er is ook een gevarieerde collectie aan bronzen objecten gevonden: bijlen, dolken met driehoekige bladen, naalden en maar liefst vier kronen of diademen die als sierraden voor op het hoofd werden gebruikt. In het museum is een elegant geometrisch exemplaar tentoongesteld dat fraai gegraveerd is en naar buiten uitstekende T-einden heeft. Verder zijn er ook diverse objecten van hout, bot en hoorn te zien, alsmede fotografische reproducties van een interssant soort textiel: het gaat om een linnen riem die samengevouwen en opgerold werd gevonden waarbij vooral het opvallende ruitvormige patroon aan beide uiteinden opvalt. Ten slotte mogen ook de grote hoeveelheid barnstenen kralen niet worden vergeten die waarschijnlijk aan elkaar geregen werden tot een halsketting.
Andere archeologische vondsten van de opgravingen in Ledro zijn ondergebracht in de collecties van het Museo del Castello del Buonconsiglio en het Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali.
Langs de oever van het meer is direct naast het Museo delle Palafitte, ofwel het paalwoningenmuseum, een reconstructie gemaakt van een van de originele huizen. Er is geen wetenschappelijke zekerheid dat de reconstructie accuraat is want de opgravingen hebben geen informatie opgeleverd over de details van de bouwwerken, maar ze dienen als een visuele ondersteuning om het belang van deze zeer bijzondere archelogische plaats te benadrukken.
