Ondanks dat Casèt niet officiëel tot het Tremalzogebied hoort, is het toch de moeite waard om genoemd te worden. In het bijzonder de pashoogte want dat is een strategisch punt voor de vogeltrek. In het verleden was dit een ideale jachtplek en vandaag de dag een minstens zo goede plek om de bewegingen van de vogels te bestuderen.
Bocca Casèt is een pas die dankzij zijn trechtervorm door vogels wordt gekozen tijdens hun migraties van Noord-Europa naar Zuid-Europa. De bergkam loopt van noord-noordoost naar zuid-zuidwest en is tevens de waterscheiding tussen de waterbassins van Ampola- en de Ledrovalleien.
De historie van Bocca Casèt als ideaal punt om vogels te vangen, begon in 1849 tijdens de Habsburgse monarchie, toen Claudio Ferrari erfdienstbaarheid over het gebied verwierf. Ferrari installeerde enkele netten om vogels te vangen en bouwde een klein huis van waaruit hij de vogels kon observeren. Het originele huis werd over de jaren heen steeds verder uitgebreid. De volgende eigenaar was Agostino Zecchini, de ‘baas van het meer’, een zeer rijk en invloedrijke persoon. Hij en zijn familie gingen door met het jagen op vogels totdat dit door het keizerrijk definitief werd verboden.
In 1920 werd de vogeljacht met netten onder het toenmalige Koninkrijk Italië opnieuw gelegaliseerd. De familie Zecchini had nog steeds het erfrecht op het gebied maar er werd reeds door een groep mannen gewerkt aan de bouw van de pas. In 1929 werden er ongeveer 27.000 vogels gevangen met netten. Dat geeft aan hoe belangijk en hoe rijk het ornitologische gebied Casèt was. De daaropvolgende jaren werd het jagen met netten opnieuw verboden. In 1943 verkocht de familie Zecchini het erfrecht aan een groep mannen die, ondanks het verbod, toch doorgingen met de jacht. Dat ging door tot 1955 toen de vangst met netten niet langer werd getolereerd en de lokale autoriteiten de mannen dwongen om op andere manieren te jagen.
Uiteindelijk werd in 1992 door een groep enthousiaste vogelliefhebbers het belang van Bocca Casèt onderkend voor de migratie van vogels. Zij bouwden netten om de vogels te kunnen vangen en te ringen. Binnen vijf dagen hadden ze 467 vogels en 18 verschillende soorten geringd. Dit onderzoek is nog steeds gaande en sinds 1996 wordt dit project geleid door het Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali.
Vroeger gebeurde het ringen slechts enkele dagen maar tegenwoordig is men 45 dagen bezig, van eind augustus tot oktober. In de loop der jaren zijn 22.685 vogels en 83 verschillende soorten geringd. Het werk bij Bocca Casèt is onderdeel geworden van het Alpenproject, een samenwerking tussen het Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali en het Istituto Nazionale per la Fauna Selvatica (nationaal instituut voor wilde fauna), dat in 1997 is gestart. Het doel van het project is om de migratie van vogels na de broedtijd te beschrijven en te controleren. Deze studie heeft geleid tot de verzameling van enorme hoeveelheden data betreffende de tijdstippen en de hoeveelheid trekvogels die jaarlijks over de Alpenketting migreren.
Deze grootschalige monitoring van herfstmigraties door het Italiaanse zijde van de Alpen is te danken aan de inzet van vele vogelringers die op ruim 30 plaatsen tegelijk actief zijn. Zij controleren de vogels, ringen ze en laten ze daarna zo snel mogelijk weer vrij.
In het internationale centrum is een aparte sectie gewijd aan Bocca Casèt en de vogelmigratie ter plaatse. Paolo Pedrini, de man die verantwoordelijk is voor dit project bij het Museo Tridentino, hoopt dat het mogelijk wordt om het huis dat is gebouwd bij de pas aan te kopen, zodat dit niet alleen gedurende de twee maanden dat de vogels worden bestuurd gebruikt kan worden maar gedurende het hele jaar als vogelcentrum kan worden ingericht.
