Lago d'Ampola is een bijzonder natuurgebied en een van de weinige meren die nog geheel in originele staat is, en omzoomd door concentrische cirkels van vegetatie, die het leefgebied vormen voor een groot aantal dieren.
De autonome provincie Trento beroept zich op zijn eigen wetgeving (artikel 68) om kleine bijzondere natuurgebieden te beschermen, die dan de naam ‘Riserve Naturali Provinciali’ krijgen. Deze kleine hoekjes natuur die nog niet ten prooi gevallen zijn aan menselijke activiteiten, bieden het noodzakelijke onderdak aan een scala van bijzondere soorten flora en fauna die deze gebieden nodig hebben om te overleven. Ze zorgen voor een natuurlijke balans tussen land, vegetatie en dierenleven en vormen een gevarieerd en complex ecosysteem. Ze zijn een oase van natuurlijk leven in een gebied dat voor een groot gedeelte in beslag wordt genomen door landbouw, industrie of bebouwing.
Lago d'Ampola ligt prachtig in het bovenste gedeelte van de Ledrovallei aan de westgrens van de provincie Trentino en heeft een nauurlijke oeverbegrenzing die het meer ook beschermt tegen overstromingen. Het is een van de weinige meren die nog volledig in originele staat is, en omzoomd door concentrische cirkels van vegetatie, waaronder gele waterlelies, riethalmen, moeras, cypergras, ondergelopen grasland en weilanden.
Zelfs al zou het huidige verbod op zwemmen in het Ampolameer niet van kracht zijn, dan nog zou baden onmogelijk zijn want de oevers zijn nog steeds in hun natuurlijke staat. In andere woorden, ze hebben een rijke vegetatie die meer geschikt is voor waterhoentjes, amfibieën en reptielen dan voor mensen. Dat betekent niet dat de laatstgenoemden niet welkom zijn. Verre van dat! De bezoekers hebben hier juist de kans om de omgeving in zijn oorspronkelijke staat te bekijken, in de wetenschap dat ze de natuur niet verstoren. Er loopt namelijk een verhoogd wandelpad over het moearsgebied waarbij de prachtige kleuren van de bloeiende orchideeën en de belangrijkste soorten waterplanten in een mini-biotoop kunnen worden aanschouwd. U kunt zelfs de namen leren van de soorten die langs het fascinerende botanische pad groeien.
Maar het echte hoogtepunt is zonder twijfel het bezoekerscentrum. Hier kunnen bezoekers echt de verschillende zones van het Ampolameer zien en ontdekken. Het begint met de ondergelopen weilanden en hun vegetatie en dieren, zoals de waterhoen, waarna onze virtuele toer zich onder water verplaatst met als middelpunt een groot aquarium.
