The painter Fasal and his frescoes

At the beginning of this century A. S. Fasal from Bolzano was asked to redecorate the three churches of the Concei hamlets; in his frescoes and graffiti he succeded in expressing with a peculiar strenght and simplicity the deep religious sensitivity of that time.

This painter was considered to be a very ingenious religious artist and documents inform us that both the priest and the population of the Concei Valley were completely satisfied and enthusiastic about his works. His masterpieces are probably the tryptychs in the presbytery of St. Martin Bishop church in Locca. One fresco represents the "Sacred Redemption's Drama" and the other the "Sanctification through the work of the Church". Even nowadays these frescoes in bright colours are able to communicate with exemplary immediacy the heartfelt devoutness that must have inspired them. The frescoes in the churches of Enguiso and Lenzumo are of no less importance and interest: it is the artist's ability that put into concrete form the historical religious events so that the figures materialize and appear alive. We cannot forget the remarkable painting on the eighteenth century high-altar of the church in Lenzumo. It is a fine example of the Venetian painting school's technique: dark and light effects give prominence to the figure of Jesus as if it were coming out from the canvas.
