La chiesa di S. Bartolomeo

The church of St. Bartolomeo is an aisleless church painted by Agostino Aldi from Mantua (end 1800 - beginning 1900) and it preserves some valuable, recently restored works.

The present building was erected in 1860 according to the plan by architect Claricini, but documents confirm the existence of a smaller rectangular church already in 1348, in the course of centuries it was often enlarged and finally rebuilt. Of course it is the 72 metres high, stone bell-tower that first captures your attention, but it is most of all the high altar piece that arouses admiration. We are talking about a precious polyptych of 1587 that seems to be by the Tintoretto painting school (a further proof of the close relationship between Venice and the Ledro Valley). The central painting represents a beautiful Madonna with the Holy Child, with Apostle St. Bartolomeo and St. George on each side, at the top the Crucifixion and Sts Peter and Paul and at the bottom of the polyptych the Crucifixion of St. Peter. The four paintings beside the main altarpiece as well as the ones above the lateral doors are precious, too. The four beautiful Madonnas are by Zorzi from Verona, while the "Last Supper" is by Valambrini and the "Holy Spirit’s Descent" is by Ignazio Unterberger. Really interesting are also the side marble altars and their fine florentine mosaic decorations that date back to the 17th and 18th centuries.
