The village

Tiarno di Sotto is known to be the village of the rich people because of the several elegant houses you can admire walking in the centre, dominated by the stately church tower, 72 m high, the second higher in the region Trentino.

A small village just 3,5 Km. from Lake Ledro offers many opportunities for healthy walks and for more difficult hikes in virtual unspoilt natural surroundings. A very important sign of the cultural and artistic treasures in the Ledro Valley is the beautiful church in Tiarno di Sotto which preserves some valuable paintings and a precious polyptych of 1587 that seams to be by the Tintoretto painting school.

The name has uncertain origins, it can derive from the latin "Silvis Armus", which means arm of the Valley with woods. Or from "Tilia", the lime tree, also if the area is poor of this kind of plant.
The most acceptable etymology of this word is probably linked to a particular trade which developped in Tiarno di Sotto, the production of the pitch, "tia", the pine tree.

Ancient evidences confirm the fact that this area was already populated in a distant age. Along the old roman road to Croina for example some important and interesting finds have benn discover.
The first houses of Tiarno were built at the foot of the hills St. Giorgio e Lèngros in the tenth and eleventh centuries. In that period the village started to form two different groups of houses. Slowly it separated in two hamlets, Tiarno di Sopra and Tiarno di Sotto.

Tiarno di Sotto, situated at the end of the valley of the torrent Massangla, has an elongated shape and it is divided in three district, Moi, Villa and Degara.
In the centreof the main square, the church St. Bartolomeo dominate the village. Also the little St. George church is worthy of mention because it is situated on the hill that overlooks both villages Tiarno di Sotto and Tiarno di Sopra and offers a lovely view. The lower part of this church goes back to the 15th century, but it was completely renewed in 1633. A mountain road and path easily leads you to the "San Giorgio" hill.

In the past, along the torrent Massangla there were seven venetian sawmills, a smithy and two mills. One of them belonged to the Family Bugatini and it hosts today a small museum.  From this mill you can easily reach the fascinating waterfall Gorg d'Abiss, following a small path into the valley.
