The Sts Peter and Paul Church in Tiarno di Sopra

« Back

In this recently built latin cross church (1939) we find parts of the previous church, which was probably erected about 1650. The hexagonal dome-shaped presbyter, characterized by large windows and whose style is completely different from the rest of the building, belong to the old church and now is a sort of separated chapel leaning against the main building. In the side wings you can still see the spans of the main front facade and of the triumphal arch as well as the Romanesque bell-tower, which were part of the old church. Through the centuries the people of Tiarno enriched their church with valuable artistic works. Even if some important paintings have now disappeared, there are still many remarkable works to be seen: the altar-piece with St. Peter on the black altar (it seems that even Tiziano worked on it, his magical finishing touch may be noticed in the details); "Jesus Christ on the Cross with Maria Magdaleine" (high altar); "Jesus Christ Baptism" and the "Virgin Mary with various saints".
