The church of Santa Lucia in Pratis in Bezzecca
|
|
This ancient little church, quietly situated on the meadows between Bezzecca and Tiarno di Sotto, was erected in the 15th century probably for the cult and worship of both communities. When every village had its own parish church St. Lucy fell into the background and was almost forgotten so it didnt pass through any remarkable restoration or renovation; for this reason it appears to us now just as it did at that time, completely intact, even if it is evident that a restoration is urgently needed. It is an aisleless building characterized by 3 Gothic spans. The small orange and vermillion bell tower together with the whiteness of the walls produce a peculiar and pleasant chromatic effect. The interior shows only a few fragments of the frescoes and graffiti that must have decorated it a long time ago. Actually it is because of these frescoes, which came to light during a light restoration in 1929 and 1941, that it was possible to tell a precise dating for the building: first half of the 15th century. In one of these fragments we can read about the tragedy of the army leader from Bergamo, Count of Carmagnola, who was decapitated under Venetian domination in 1432. |
